D-Day 80

14th Jun 2024

On 14th June we paid our respects to the memory of all those who did so much for us during WW2 with special focus on the events of 6th June 1944 remembered as D-Day or Operation Overlord or The Normandy Landings. We dressed up in period costume, had a D- Day art/craft competition, P5-P7 attended a memorial service in Mountnorris Presbyterian Church led by Rev Reid and attended by members of Markethill British Legion and also members of the Church Session. Mr Foster laid a wreath on behalf of our school and Rev Reid told us of the sacrifice of local men who gave their all in the liberation of Europe. In the afternoon it was an honour to have Mr and Mrs Harold Briggs and their German friend by the name of Hermann. Mr and Mrs Briggs are the aunt and uncle of our own Mrs Anderson and it was a privilege for us to hear the story of Mrs Anderson's grandfather (Mr Briggs' father) who served in WW2 and landed on the beaches in June 1944. He was a lorry driver in the armed forces.. Mr David Briggs survived the war and although proud of the part he played in the liberation of Europe found it difficult to speak of his experiences. We salute his memory and say We will remember them.
